Your Big Year

Your Big Year is a global competition that helps to answer the question “What is global citizenship and why is it important to us?”

44,489 individuals from 168 countries entered a unique Smaller Earth led competition at the end of 2010. The top 24 were brought to Liverpool as part of Global Entrepreneurship Week. After a thorough week of tasks and probing interviews, two winners emerged.

24 year-old Michael Teoh and 26 year-old Carielle Doe took up the life-changing task of their lives, visiting 22 completely different countries and cultures, meeting world leaders, innovators, and inspirational entrepreneurs; all in a bid to seek out the truth about social, economic and political injustice on our planet.

Over 60,000 people entered the 2011/12 competition, which reached its climax on March 16th at the 2012 Global Entrepreneurship Congress. 16 individuals from 14 different countries were flown to Liverpool and competed in a series of challenges to determine who would be the Smaller Earth Ambassador for 2012/13. The winner was 24 year-old Ugandan Charles Batte, who impressed the judges with a real will to make a difference coupled with first-class oratory skills. Charles will begin his ambassadorial trip in May 2012.

Smaller Earth is honoured to coordinate and host Your Big Year, which is a major proponent of our 2020 vision to positively impact 20 million people by 2020. For more information on the competition, please visit www.yourbigyear.com.
