Why Pay to Volunteer

Where do your volunteer fees go?

The majority of participant fees for Smaller Earth volunteer programs go directly into helping the community. About 60-80% of volunteer fees provide funds for maintenance of facilities, education and workshops, materials and equipment, food for projects, and overall development of the community and rehabilitation centers.

For you, the programs include food, accommodation, orientation, and additional volunteer training along with emergency assistance as well.

As a volunteer, be inspired by the fact that the majority of your participant fee is invested to positively impact the community. Your efforts directly help further the future success of the projects.

In addition, volunteers from all over the world help to employ local staff in communities that may not otherwise have jobs.

Here are some examples of how your money is spent:

Medical Outreach and HIV/AIDS Awareness - South Africa

Volunteer fees improve clinic facilities to be more hygienic and organized, provide medical care and nutrition to the community, increase education on HIV/AIDS awareness, and fund medical supplies, food parcels, vitamins, and building and farming materials.

Volunteer Teaching - Kenya

Volunteers help fund schools that desire to become independently sustainable. For some children in Kenya, not attending schools means no guaranteed meal for the day, so funds will also go towards providing daily nutrition for the children. For example, one school in this site was closed prior to volunteer involvement and now provides 242 children a meal each day. Most importantly volunteers give hope to the community by teaching English and becoming involved in local development.

Typically, the only additional costs beyond the cost of the program are for flights to and from the site, travel insurance, personal items, and extra activities or traveling adventures around the area!
