Work as an Au pair in China experiencing a new culture and language whilst working with children. This unique Au Pair program gives you the opportunity to immerse yourself in the Chinese culture, work with and teach English to children and improve your language skills with free Mandarin lessons!
You will be welcomed into a new home with open arms as you adjust to family life in China. Proudly home to some of the oldest historical wonders of the world, this program will enable you to gain an insight into this fascinating country.

Work as an Au Pair
Living in Shanghai, Beijing or Ningbo with all accommodation and meals provided by your family, you will have plenty of time to gain an insight into this fascinating country. You will also receive a monthly allowance to cover any personal expenses.
After landing in China (with airfare included) you will be met by your assigned local coordinator who will take you through a full orientation to equip you with all the skills needed to be a successful Au Pair. You will also be given the chance to meet other international Au Pairs in your area, before leaving to meet your carefully-matched family. What a fantastic way to spend a gap year!
Program Highlights:

Program Details
Work as a paid Au Pair: Families looking to hire an Au Pair want to expose their children to the English language as well as widen their cultural education. You will work with Smaller Earth prior to departure to ensure that you are matched with a suitable family. There are three different time periods you can work in China: three months, six months and twelve months.
What does an Au Pair do?: One of the great things about being an Au Pair is the variety it offers. Each host family is unique and has their own schedules, traditions and hobbies - no Au Pair experience would be exactly the same. Smaller Earth will strive to match you with your host family based on shared interests so you are fully prepared before you arrive at the family home.
You will work as an Au Pair for 25 hours per week with responsibilities such as playing with children, taking them to and from school and preparing snacks for them. The main purpose of the position is to develop the children's English language skills through interaction.
Learn Mandarin Chinese: As part of the Au Pair in China program, you will receive eight to twelve hours free Mandarin Chinese classes per week. Having the ability to speak the world's most widely spoken language will certainly enhance your CV for future employers and will give you an competitive edge. With additional support of a small classroom size and great teachers, your Chinese will improve at a fast rate!
Does an Au Pair have a social life?: Wherever your are located we will create social opportunities so you can meet other Au Pairs. Your assigned coordinator will ensure that you make friends with others in your area, so you always have group to hang out in the local coffee shop! There will also be organised trips to see the local sites and explore the wonders China has to offer.
Location and accomodation
- You will be located in either Shanghai, Beijing or Ningo
- Chinese families typically live in apartments
- You are guaranteed a private room and three meals a day
- The location is dependant on where the family lives
Age & Required Experience
- You need to be between the ages of 18 and 29
- You must be fluent in English without having a strong accent
- You must have a clean criminal record
- Have a strong interest in China and a desire to learn
On Arrival in China
Upon arrival in China you will be met by your local coordinator, who will assist you in acclimatising to the local customs and culture. During your orientation you will train alongside new Au Pairs and will learn everything you need to know about your placement. Your local coordinator will be in contact with you throughout your placement and will be on hand to provide you will full support 24/7. Your coordinator will provide you with the contact details of the other Au Pairs in the surrounding area so you can arrange social events with new friends during your time off.
