Funding your trip
Volunteers and interns help keep important development and conservation programs running around the world, which is why we strive to provide Smaller Earth participants with the best support ever. After all, the last thing we want to see is hardworking and enthusiastic people deterred from positively impacting their world.
Smaller Earth understands the cost of volunteer projects and internships abroad can be daunting. Before you turn away, we are here to help you look within your local community for ways to pay for all or part of your trip.
Check out the following tips on fundraising:
Plan Ahead
It is necessary to stay organized through the fundraising processes. Your prospective donors will be much more willing to help, sponsor, and donate if you approach them with a clear vision and mission. Make a list of what you aim to accomplish, how much money you are looking to raise, and different phases on achieving your goals. Write a script if it helps you compile your thoughts. As you do this, be concise about what you are looking for.
Keep in mind, fundraising can take time which makes planning ahead even more important. You should consider this when choosing your departure date and reach out to Smaller Earth for advice.
Get Creative
Bake sales, car washes, benefit concerts and auctions… can you imagine where we are going with this?
Brainstorm who in your community might be interested in sponsoring a part of your trip or can help you gain some publicity. If you are about to head off to coach sports in Zambia, your local shoe or sporting goods store might be willing to make a donation and might even throw in some supplies for you to bring!
Even if companies or stores seem interested in helping but not able to provide cash, ask them to donate something you can raffle off. Think about other services people might be interested in. Perhaps some of your friends are in a band and would be willing to have a concert you can charge a cover admission for. Many restaurants and bars will provide space for these events for free!
Ask for Help!
Get in touch with Smaller Earth for further assistance. We can write a letter explaining the positive impact your involvement will make and outline how the costs break down.
Networking is always important so reach out and ask people around you for help. A professor may know of eligible grants or interested foundations. Your family friend might have connections you were never aware of. If you reach out and ask for help, you might be surprised just how much support you receive!
Be a Walking Billboard
Talk about your upcoming trip as a volunteer or intern. This is an exciting endeavor you are about to embark on and people will be excited to hear about it. The more you share, the more those around you will get inspired. Maybe someone will even join you!
Last, but not Least
Don’t give up! You have read this far, which means you are motivated and ready to make a difference. If you get discouraged, pick up the phone and call Smaller Earth. Revisit your long-term plan and identify progress you have made. Just remember at the end of all your hard work, there will be the rewarding experience of your project!
